HINTERHOF

Hinterhof: A courtyard so to say, usually located between the rear building (Hinterhaus) which is adjacent to the Main building (Vorderhaus). There’s been a long a industrial and social history on this sort of urban housing all over the world. A multi-occupancy building also known as tenements in bigger dimensions. A Hinterhaus was meant to be housing for working and lower class people whereas the upper middle class and rich lived in the Main buildings. A notorious tenement was Meyers Hof which at one point housed 2,000 people and consisted of six courtyards. Today, living in a rear building is as desired as living in the Main building if not more due to the fact that it’s quieter back there.

I was intrigued by Berlin’s courtyards upon arrival in the german capital in 2013. I felt there was so one diversity in each one them when I looked up from below. Diversity in architecture, skewed angles, texture in the facades, and range from vivid colors to bleak ones. Anything from run-down courtyards to modern buildings, and all of them with an addition of something very unique. Also, it had always been a vital part of what I associated with the spirit of Berlin and its citizens. At least least that was my perception of it. So I started to walk up and down the streets of Berlin to shoot those beauties. From Prenzlauer Berg and Mitte to Kreuzberg and Friedrichshain and Charlottenburg – and many Boroughs in between and beyond. This site is dedicated to showing you a selection of this project as well as a glimpse of urban housing in Berlin from a different point of view.
